Spring has Sprung!!

This EtsyBloggers blog carnival is hosted by me!! Woo-hoo, my first time hosting!! I picked some great topics (at least I think so). Here they are:
1) Spring time is almost here, do you have any special items in your shop to celebrate the season?
2) March is National Nutrition Month, National Irish American Heritage Month & National Women's History Month (among others) - Share a story, a craft or an interesting tidbit about these topics.

Obviously, I can easily blog about either of these topics, but, I think I will talk about spring. After a cold and snowy winter, I am very relieved that spring time is here! The pup can run around outside, the little man can play basketball again and my allergies will take over my nose and sinuses!

Spring also brings BASEBALL!!! No more searching for something to watch anymore, I will be watching BASEBALL!! Yankees are my first choice, followed by the Mets (gotta support the local teams), followed by whatever team is on ESPN or ESPN2. The little man is also very excited for baseball, I hope my hubby is ready to spend hours playing catch and tossing pitches!

Check back here next week to see all the blog carnival participants!!

Hooray for Spring!!

Who Needs A Vacation?

Its Blog Carnival time again! Our lovely host, HandmadeBySandi, would like to know "Of all the places in the world, where would you like to go and why?" I'm not picky, really... I'd like to be sitting here:

Drinking one of these:

Listening to a playlist of his greatest hits:

To guitars, tiki bars and a whole lotta love
Mangoes and Marley, you know, fit me like a glove
Sixth gear with nowhere to steer
When enough is enough
It's guitars, tiki bars and a whole lotta love
-Kenny Chesney, Guitars and Tiki Bars

Now let's all close our eyes, and pretend we are there.... ahhh.......

Happy Day Dreaming!

Looking ahead...

As I am sure you've noticed, we just started a new year! The EtsyBloggers noticed that too, and this time around they ask the following "Now that 2010 is here, what do you have planned/look forward to/hope to accomplish this year?"

The question can be directed towards the shop, the blog and the personal life. So, I'll address each...

For my shop, my goal is to list something new at least every other day. I have items made that I haven't listed or even photographed and I really would love to keep my shop current. I also have a very empty Artfire shop that I should fill up!

If you've been reading the blog the past two weeks, then you already know about this new feature, if not, then please, read on! Every Monday (or so) I will be selecting a featured item from my shop. There will be a special deal on this item for the entire week (or until someone buys it!). You'll have to read the blog to find out the item, the deal and the code to put in the notes to seller at checkout.

Personal life, these seem to be the hardest. I am currently in a job that will only pay hourly and is not looking to commit to bring me on full time and on a salary basis. So, I really need to look for something that has more stability and benefits. That's my personal goal for 2010 - find a permanent, stable job before I get laid off from my current one!

What do YOU have planned for 2010?

New Year's Fun

Well, 2009 is almost at its end and 2010 is on the horizon. It wasn't a terrible year, although, I do admit it could have been much better. It was filled with car troubles, lost jobs, slow craft shows and slow web sales, but it was also filled with fun, love and laughs from my friends and family (both online and offline).

This brings me to the EtsyBloggers blog carnival question:
Tell us about your plans for ringing in the 2010 New Year!! Staying home/going out? Getting drunk, falling about?

Ha! There shall be no drunkeness in my home this year, although we used to throw quite the party back in the day. Its been a few years now and we are in a smaller apartment, the dog doesn't appreciate overnight guests and its hard to have a rockin' party when your toddler goes to bed at 9 PM.

This year, we'll be spending New Year's eve and day quietly at home. The little man will finally have some quality time with all his new toys from Christmas and hopefully I can get some crocheting done and get some items listed in my totally empty Artfire shop and add some new items to my Etsy shop.

I am hoping for a healthy, happy, quiet and prosperous 2010 for all of my friends and family!

Please don't forget to check out my Ring in the New Year sale, it ends at midnight on January 1. See this blog post for details.

Be sure to visit Joey & Aleethea on Monday, January 4 to see all the other great entries into this blog carnival!

Holiday Recipes - Cranberry Sauce

Earlier in the month, the EtsyBloggers wanted to know about our favorite holiday recipes, I missed the blog carnival, but I'd still like to share this simple recipe that is sure to impress - homemade whole berry cranberry sauce, that's right FROM SCRATCH. Those two words seem to make people go totally insane "oh my god, you made it from scratch?!?!" Yes, my dear friend, I did...

I always make cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving, then we started having ham on new year's eve, so I would make it then too. This year, we are likely having ham on Christmas eve, so I will make it then. Its really so simple, you can make it anytime you want, assuming you like cranberry sauce enough to eat the whole thing before it goes bad.

Picture from http://www.cookingdebauchery.com/ (I never went to their site, I just Googled pictures of cranberry sauce)

Ingredients:
1 bag of fresh cranberries
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of water

Rinse cranberries.
Boil water and sugar, add cranberries, simmer until cranberries pop open, stir occasionally.
Remove from heat, allow to cool, refrigerate until serving time.

Some recipes say to toss it all in the pot and boil it together, you can substitute juice and fake sugar, but it won't gel like regular cranberry sauce will.

If you forget any of the specifics (I do, all the time, I know, how I can I forget the 3 ingredients), doesn't matter, it ALWAYS on the back of the bag of cranberries!

Enjoy the holidays!

Let's Talk Colors

The EtsyBloggers have asked an interesting question for this Blog Carnival. They ask "What are your favorite color combinations? What do you create using those colors?"

There are lots of colors that I like to work with, so I decided to look through my shop and see what I have the most of. There is a lot of red and a lot of black, but it could be bacause I have many Christmas and Halloween items lingering around in my shop. I also have a lot of blue, blue beaded jewelry, blue winter themed ornaments and blue toys, blankets and scarves. Blue is a fun color to work with because there are so many lovely shades.

This beaded snowflake ornament has royal blue and light blue glass beads:

Blue also compliments a lot of other colors - it can be patriotic, funky and soft.

So, you see, having the blues isn't really a bad thing!

A Pat on the Back!

The EtsyBloggers have an interesting question for this biweekly blog carnival. They ask the following:
What was your most successful sales event or product, and why do you think it was?

Hands down, my most successful sales event was my Earth Day sale from earlier this year. I offered free shipping on all eco-friendly items - washcloths, make-up remover pads, dishcloths and upcycled jewelry.

During that period, I sold several sets of white make-up remover pads. I'm not sure why white was so popular, but I really should get my butt to the store and get more white cotton yarn!!

I think the sale was popular for two reasons:
1) My washcloths/make-up pads/dishcloths are very reasonably priced, and in some cases, by offering free shipping, I cut the total price almost in half.

2) Now more than ever, people are looking for ways to eliminate waste, save money and keep their families healthy. My washcloths and make-up remover pads are machine washable and last a very, very long time (I am tempted to say that they will last forever, but I can't be 100% sure of that) and the dishcloths replace stinky sponges that can hold mold and bacteria. All of them are pretty and give the sense of luxury while still being good for the environment and helping to save money.

I was surprised at how well the sale went, up until that point, I had little success with sales. Will this be an annual event?? You'll have to keep reading my blog to find out! ;-)

Halloween Fun!

Halloween is just around the corner and the EtsyBloggers want to know the following:
1) Halloween is approaching! Do you do any kind of decorating for this spooky, fun holiday? If so, show us pictures!
2) Share your favorite Halloween memory from your childhood (it could be a costume, party, etc.).

Well, I don't have much to say on either topic, Halloween was never really big in my family. So, I don't have many childhood Halloween memories that are worth sharing. I also don't do much decorating, mostly because my dog is insane and tries to pull decorations off the walls and while its entertaining to watch, its pretty much a waste of time and money to hang up very much.

My son is just over 2 years old and I'd like to make sure that he has some awesome Halloween memories to share with his friends and family when he gets older. I am going to make an effort to make sure that he always enjoys the day. This year he's already fallen in love with a foam cowboy hat that he saw in the Disney Store. Its supposed to be Woody from Toy Story, but being that we've never seen the movie, he has no idea about that. However, I do believe that my little guy is going to be a cowboy this year, and of course, the cutest little cowboy you've ever laid your eyes on!

Here's to a happy Halloween!

Show Your Face!!

Well, apparently, the EtsyBloggers want to see my face. While I'm not really ashamed of how I look, I really don't have any pictures of myself, I am usually pointing the camera at my son or my dog. I do have one decent picture from last October's Fabulous Fall Festival that I will gladly share with you.

Me w/ my crochet section

Yes, I know, its a year old, and yes its not an extreme close-up of me, but hey, its the best I got on short notice. Perhaps I'll have my darling hubby take a photo of me sometime soon... ;-)

July is National Hot Dog Month!

The EtsyBloggers tell me that July is National Hot Dog Month. Well, in my house, every day is national hot dog day! My son is OBSESSED with hot dogs. I am pretty sure that he could eat a hot dog for every meal every day and be perfectly happy. Since he's so incredibly in love with hot dogs, I've started buying turkey dogs, less fat, less sodium, less nastiness. I found a decent brand in ShopRite and its often on sale - its called Kunzler. 8 dogs in a resealable package. Can't go wrong with that!

Show & Tell: Summer line

Summer is almost here! Sun, swimming, ice cream, watermelon, BBQ's and hanging out by the pool or at the beach (or as us Jersey folk say "down the shore").

Shell jewelry is always a great summer accessory, it goes great with a sun dress, swimsuit, shorts and a tee or any other fun summer outfit.

I'm also planning on introducing some fun anklets and toe rings in the next few weeks, so keep those eyes peeled!

Happy Summer

My Dream Space

I need SPACE! My own little space where I can leave my beads, wires, jump rings, clasps and tools out and not waist precious crafting time setting up and cleaning up. You see, I have an almost-2-yr-old who is very curious and very interested in what I am doing. When he sees me photographing finished products he slowly makes his way over and says "oooh, pretty." When I say thank you, he'll ask "Mine?" I'll apologize and tell him that its not his and then he'll look at me with those big deer-in-headlight eyes and say "I touch?". He typically listens when I tell him that he can't touch, but his little fingers get as close as possible to whatever I am taking pictures of and I often have to edit out his hands or his toys from the edges of my photos.

So, my dream is to have a craft room. It doesn't have to be big, it just needs a sturdy table, a comfy chair, lots of shelves and preferrably some good lighting. Oh, and the major necessity - a door that locks from both the inside and the outside and has a high handle that can't be reached by a toddler!

*sigh* We can all dream....

Happy Crafting!

Spring has Sprung!

Spring! After a long snowy winter its a relief to see the temperatures climbing and the sun shining. Of course, for me, it also means the eyes will be itching, the nose will be running and my rescue inhaler will be getting a work-out! Even though my allergies will be in full bloom, spring is still a welcome season. I love it when its warm enough to stroll out in a fleece or light sweater and I really love the fact that my son can play outside again. A 2 year old boy has TONS of energy and my small living room just can't contain him, so being able to play outside really brightens both our days.

Spring always makes me think of flowers, and I do have some sweet flowers in my shop (and they won't make you sneeze!):

Happy Spring!

Sell my jewelry? Really?

The EtsyBloggers Blog Carnival asks an interesting question this time around - What made you open a shop on Etsy? What do you like about being a seller on Etsy? What don't you like? I suppose its technically three questions, but anyway...

I've been making things forever, as I am sure most of you already know, so I won't bore you with the details. My good friend Ali from Ali's Adorables found Etsy.com one day while surfing and showed me the site. I'd made her a few necklaces and bracelets as gifts and she decided that she was going to open up a shop and encouraged me to do the same. I set up an account, but it was some time before I decided to actually add anything to my shop. I had made tons of necklaces, bracelets and earrings and most were just sitting in a box waiting for me to do something with them, so I finally decided to take pictures and list them for sale.

I love Etsy because it was so easy to set up a shop! I didn't have to create my own webpage or worry about how to collect payment - Etsy did all of that for me. I also met a lot of really cool people through Etsy street teams and the forums are a great resource.

As for what I don't like - right now its really hard for jewelry sellers to get noticed - there are so many great items out there and listings get buried almost instantly. And the tag abuse is rampant! Its horrendously difficult to browse for things to purchase. Don't even get me started on the search function!

So, there you have it, I opened my Etsy shop three years ago and its been one of the best things I ever did. I was getting tired of making things because it seemed like all of my creations just sat in a box, now people all over the world have a little bit of my heart in their jewelry box. Its really cool!

Happy Shopping!

Valentine's Day Happenings

Valentine's Day has never really been a big deal for me. My mom always gave us a little box of chocolate and conversation hearts and a cute card. My hubby and I exchanged small gifts for a while, but lately we haven't done much. This year however, I think we will plan a "grown-up" fondue dinner which will occur after my son has fallen asleep (hopefully we can wait that long to eat!).

My son is 20 months old now and thinks that coloring is the greatest thing in the whole wide world (next to milk and Disney's Cars movie). So, I plan on cutting out little contruction paper hearts and helping him made Valentine's Day cards for my parents, my sister and my grandmothers. I think they will get a big kick out of his artwork and he will have a ball coloring all weekend long.

Here's an example of his fabulous artwork:
08/30 1/24/09271/365 1/28/09
Look out Picasso!

If paper hearts aren't your thing, take a look at these heart earrings that are available in my Etsy shop:

I have them available in several colors, click here to see what I have in stock.

Don't forget, there is still time to enter my One World One Heart Giveway! I'll be drawing a winner on Feb 11.

Happy Valentine's Day!

What is the CPSIA all about?

I'm sure many of you have heard about CPSIA and like me have a lot of questions. Especially if you are a seller or buyer of handmade items for children. The law is set to protect children from harmful chemicals in toys, clothing and bedding and in light of the recent scandals we've seen with lead paint and tainted baby formula, regulations are deperately needed. But from all that I've seen, CPSIA is taking the sampling requirements to an extreme and this could prevent many small businesses from providing toys and clothing for children. When in reality, the crafters and local businesses aren't to blame for the recent scandals - its actually the big businesses!

There are great resources already on the internet for information in this potential regulation. With that in mind, I am not going to rehash it all, but instead I am going to share with you some of the best (in my opinion) sources of information.

1) Fellow EtsyNJ member Greco Woodcrafting has several articles on his blog about this topic. Here are links to them:
National Bankruptcy Day: http://grecowoodcrafting.wordpress.com/2008/12/05/national-bankruptcy-day/

2) Fellow EtsyBlogger Joey & Aleethea:

3) Change.Org

4) Etsy.com Storque:

5) Facebook Groups:

Rally Against the CPSIA legislature: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=38306568596

That is just a small sampling of the information that is available about this pending legislation. Read about it, educate yourself, see if and how it will affect you and then make your voice heard.
