I Want It - Don't Panic Pendant

I randomly like to type "42" into the search box in Etsy and see what happens. If you don't know, 42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything. And, if you knew that already, then you know how perfect this necklace is!!

Don't Panic the Answer is 42 by LaPetiteFleur:

It says "Don't Panic" on the front and has the number 42 stamped on the back. How awesome is that?!?!

Now who is going to buy it for me???

Adopt a Shelter Pet

Its a well known fact that October is breast cancer awareness month, as well as many other things. But, its also National Adopt a Shelter Pet month. There are many, many, many shelters in this country with many, many, many unwanted pets. Most times, these pets find themselves in shelters through no fault of their own - people get a cute puppy, then realize its too much work, or they are allergic or they move to a place that doesn't allow pets and so forth and so on... Sometimes the pets are taken away from abusive homes.

My husband and I decided to get a pet a few years after we got married. I immediately started looking on Pet Finder and found many adorable doggies. We later found out that our local PetSmart had adoption nights! So, we went one night saw the most gorgeous dogs we'd ever seen. Purrs N' Pups had rescued a pregnant dog from a kill shelter. In fact, this shelter had a "drop off pen", you know kinda like Blockbuster, you can just dump your unwanted dog in this pen during the night and in the morning the shelter workers would take them in.

By the time we had gotten there, only 4 pups were left from the litter. We oohed and ahhed and pet some of the pups and then I began filling out paper work. My husband continued to look at the pups and we had pretty much decided on a brown and white spotted male (think of a beagle's coloring) when out of nowhere, this sweet little black puppy woke up from her nap and pushed her way over to my hubby. She shoved her brother out of the way and started licking my hubby's hand. I picked her up and she instantly put her head down on my shoulder and snuggled in for another nap. It's true what they say - you don't pick the dog, the dog picks you!!

We've had our pup for 3 years now and she is the sweetest, most loving (and the most stubborn) dog we've ever met. She instantly loved my son when we brought him home from the hospital and they now are like sister and brother. A gorgeous dog that may not have lived had this rescue group not taken her pregnant mother from the kill shelter.

If you are looking for a pet - please, visit your local animal shelter and pet rescue group or look online. There are hundreds of pets that need a good loving home.

Fingerless Gloves - My First Attempt

As you know from yesterday's post, my hands are VERY cold. I need to be able to type and text and drive and all those other things that people need to do, but I need my hands to be warm and not totally numb. I started thinking about fingerless gloves, I looked around Etsy and found some awesome pairs. But, then I got to thinking - I don't want to wait for these things to be shipped to me, my hands need warmth now. I am crafty, I'll bet I can make a pair... I jumped on Ravelry.com and started hunting for patterns. I found some awesome ones, but decided to start simple and chose this one from Marlo's Crochet Corner.

I dug through my yarn stash (all 4 storage bins) and came up with some Paton's Classic merino wool in black. The pattern called for worsted weight, and I thought this was a little thin, so I added some miscellaneous thread weight gray yarn that somehow wound up in my possession.

Here is a photo of the main body - before thumb and trim:
Fingerless Glove - Before Thumb

I kinda liked is this way, but really wanted to see if I could do the thumb. So, I carried on. The pattern called for a row of single crochet at the top near the fingers and at the cuffs. I modified it slightly - I did two rounds of whip stitching across the top near the fingers, added a row of slip stitch around the thumb and did two rows of half double crochet at the cuff. This is how it came out:
Fingerless Glove - After Thumb

I love it! The top is low enough so that I can still wear my rings and the cuff is long enough to keep me warm but not so long that its uncomfortable. Now comes the challenge - making the second one exactly the same.... Yep... the second one is slightly shorter, I must have missed stitch somewhere even though I was so careful in counting.

After wearing them for a few days, I think I will try making another pair without the thumb. I am thinking, one pair in brown (to match my brown work outfits) and one pair in a fun color - perhaps red or purple or stripes - to wear at home on the weekends.

I Want It - Fingerless Gloves

The Problem:
My office is majorly chilly, my hands are quite cold while I type away at my desk in my little cube. I would like to keep my hands warm, look stylish and still be able to type without pausing to rub my hands together.

The Solution:
Fingerless Gloves

The Second Problem:
Which pair to buy???

Long Plum Arm Warmers Fingerless Gloves by LazyTcrochet

Extra Long Fingerless Gloves by ShellMitchell

Black Fingerless Gloves by seahorsedesigns

Shavasana- fingerless gloves by Happiknits

Decisions, decisions....

I decided to attempt to make my own pair, and while they came out awesome, I am still contemplating buying a pair of the ones listed here. Stay tuned for photos of my first attempt.

Things they say....

Oh the things the little ones say! One afternoon I had my little guy "help" me with the laundry. As many of you know, having a 2 yr old help you with anything means that it will take at least twice as long to get done. Anyway, I am folding laundry and he is helping by laying on the floor driving his cars over speed bumps (i.e. my feet). Then this conversation takes place:

Him - Mommy?
Me - What's up?
Him - Dair a runaway truck.
Me - A runaway truck??
Him - Yes
Me - Oh no...
Him - Its OK, Mommy
Me - Its OK? Why?
Him - The horsies are getting it.
Me - The horsies are getting the runaway truck?
Him - Yes, Mommy. Dat what I say.
Me - Well, then, I won't worry.
Him - Good.

Where on earth does a two year old come up with that??

I'm featured!

I'm featured with some other great shops over at Rose Works Jewelry's Treasury Blog: Etsy Bloggers in Purple! Check it out!

Halloween Fun!

Halloween is just around the corner and the EtsyBloggers want to know the following:
1) Halloween is approaching! Do you do any kind of decorating for this spooky, fun holiday? If so, show us pictures!
2) Share your favorite Halloween memory from your childhood (it could be a costume, party, etc.).

Well, I don't have much to say on either topic, Halloween was never really big in my family. So, I don't have many childhood Halloween memories that are worth sharing. I also don't do much decorating, mostly because my dog is insane and tries to pull decorations off the walls and while its entertaining to watch, its pretty much a waste of time and money to hang up very much.

My son is just over 2 years old and I'd like to make sure that he has some awesome Halloween memories to share with his friends and family when he gets older. I am going to make an effort to make sure that he always enjoys the day. This year he's already fallen in love with a foam cowboy hat that he saw in the Disney Store. Its supposed to be Woody from Toy Story, but being that we've never seen the movie, he has no idea about that. However, I do believe that my little guy is going to be a cowboy this year, and of course, the cutest little cowboy you've ever laid your eyes on!

Here's to a happy Halloween!
