Sell my jewelry? Really?

The EtsyBloggers Blog Carnival asks an interesting question this time around - What made you open a shop on Etsy? What do you like about being a seller on Etsy? What don't you like? I suppose its technically three questions, but anyway...

I've been making things forever, as I am sure most of you already know, so I won't bore you with the details. My good friend Ali from Ali's Adorables found Etsy.com one day while surfing and showed me the site. I'd made her a few necklaces and bracelets as gifts and she decided that she was going to open up a shop and encouraged me to do the same. I set up an account, but it was some time before I decided to actually add anything to my shop. I had made tons of necklaces, bracelets and earrings and most were just sitting in a box waiting for me to do something with them, so I finally decided to take pictures and list them for sale.

I love Etsy because it was so easy to set up a shop! I didn't have to create my own webpage or worry about how to collect payment - Etsy did all of that for me. I also met a lot of really cool people through Etsy street teams and the forums are a great resource.

As for what I don't like - right now its really hard for jewelry sellers to get noticed - there are so many great items out there and listings get buried almost instantly. And the tag abuse is rampant! Its horrendously difficult to browse for things to purchase. Don't even get me started on the search function!

So, there you have it, I opened my Etsy shop three years ago and its been one of the best things I ever did. I was getting tired of making things because it seemed like all of my creations just sat in a box, now people all over the world have a little bit of my heart in their jewelry box. Its really cool!

Repurposed T-Shirts

I saw the idea a while back about cutting up old t-shirts into strips and making yarn from them. I thought, wow, I have TONS of t-shirts and I wear very few of them. That's a great idea, so much better than tossing them in the trash. Then life happened and although the idea stayed filed away in my brain, I never got around to doing anything about it.... until now!!

I had a lovely pink cotton sleep shirt that I simply don't wear anymore. Its soft and comfy and a very pretty color. So, I got the scissors and started cutting away!! I thought for sure I would mess it up somehow, but I didn't and I got a lovely continuous strand of roughly 1 inch wide "yarn". I also cut up a 3X grey t-shirt that I wore almost every day for the last 2 months of my pregnancy (I had that and a Yankee jersey that still fit over my belly).

Now time to think, what to do with it? I had wanted to make a large rug for my entrance foyer in my house. But that would take too long and I would be bored with it after a few weeks. Plus, my back hurt from sitting on the floor hunched over a t-shirt with a large pair of scissors. Hrm.... a hat? a scarf? wrist warmers? NO! Even better! Drum roll please.....

Ta-da! A bowl! This bowl would be perfect sitting on a foyer table holding keys, a kitchen counter holding keys or a cell phone, in a bathroom or bedroom filled with potpourri or sitting on a night table holding extra change.

I have another small ball of the same color "yarn" and a ball of light grey. I also have several shirts just begging to be cut up and repurposed - they are white, grey, purple and a hot shade of green. And believe me, there are MANY more shirts in my storage space just waiting to find a new life holding your small objects.

What? You said you are in love with my little bowl? Well, you are in luck, its available now in my Etsy shop - just click here!

Stay tuned folks, I hope to take some before and after pictures of the next shirt I cut up. I know, I rock like that! :-D

Baby Shower Blanket

A family friend just had a baby shower, she is due any day now and is expecting a boy. I had planned on making a blanket for the new little guy and a while back asked my mom if she could talk to her mom and find out what color scheme she was planning on for the baby's nursery. Would she prefer your typical pastel blue? Gender neutral green/yellow/white? Or bolder colors that the little guy would appreciate as he got older? Well, she found out all right, but she wasn't as tactful about it as I had assumed she would be. The conversation went something like this:

My mom: Melissa wants to make a blanket for the baby. What color should she make it?
Her mom: I don't know, let me ask. I know she registered for Nautica bedding, its dark blue and some other colors. I'll ask to make sure.
.... a few days go by ....
Her mom: She said navy blue and white
My mom: She asked her and she said navy blue and white.

What? She asked her? What the? Umm, hello, surprise???????? *sigh* Well, at least I know what colors she wants. I was tempted to add some red to it, but I couldn't find a good picture of the Nautica sheets on Babies R' Us. Then I thought that just plain old navy blue and white would be a little drab. I looked through my yarn stash for something that would compliment and found a nice yellow yarn - not too bright, but not pastel either. Perfect! I already knew what pattern I wanted to use, so now it was time to practice a bit and pick the right sized hook. I made a blanket using this pattern with baby weight yarn and used an E hook. So, I figured with worsted weight yarn that an H hook would be a good choice. I was wrong, it came out way too tight and wound up going all the way up to a J hook! The only good thing about using a hook that big is that the blanket worked up in no time!

Here's the finished blanket:

The shower was yesterday and I was really nervous about whether she'd like it or not, I mean after all, I added yellow and she never said anything about yellow.... I'm always nervous about giving my handmade things as gifts, but not so much when people buy them from my Etsy shop. You see, I figure, when they buy from me, they know what they are getting, they chose it!! I was sick with nerves when I made all 6 of my son's daycare teachers earrings and bracelets for Christmas!! Of course they loved them, but still... I know, I'm silly....

So, back to my story... she loved it! She even got a little choked up over it, but I attribute that more to hormones than the beauty of my work. I got tons of compliments on it and didn't realize how big I made it until I saw it draped over her 8 months pregnant belly! Yes, I got "oohs" and "wows" and "you made that?" and "how long did it take?" Of course, I didn't throw out my business card to everyone there, I figured that would be tacky. But, those who are that interested, would ask her mom who would ask my mom who would direct them to me.

Here's a close-up of it:

I simply LOVE this pattern. I love how on one side the yellow and white seem to pop out over the blue and on the other side the blue pops out over the yellow and white. This is the second of three items I made using this pattern. One is a pale purple baby blanket that is available in my shop and the other is a blue washcloth that I recently sold. I'll most definitely use this pattern again! I've been itching to made a grown-up sized throw blanket and I'm torn between using this pattern and a classic zig zag pattern like the one I used here.

So, do you have a baby shower to attend? Would you like to wow the mom-to-be with a one of a kind stunning baby blanket from Made By Melissa? You would? Fabulous! Check out this listing and you can select the colors and the pattern!! Or you can chose from blankets that I have already completed.

Yay for babies!!

Ribbon Necklaces!

Ribbon necklaces are my newest favorite jewelry item to make. They are so cute and colorful and can be custom made to your favorite colors. These necklaces were a big hit with the little ladies at my craft show. Quite a few moms were pulled back to my table with a little whisper "Mommy, can I have one?".

I have several in my shop right now, I have been pairing them with clay charms. The kitty cats seem to be most popular, with the flowers a close second. I also have puppy dogs, fish, and dragonflies.

I have the kitties available in 6 different colors and 4 different breeds of dog.

If you don't see a color combo that you like, as always, feel free to send me a conversation in Etsy. I love getting convos! And don't forget about my sale, ribbon necklaces are eligiable for free shipping!

Baby Blankets and Twinkies

Yes, you read that right, baby blankets and Twinkies.... not that they really have all that much in common, but I ran into both of them this morning.

I sold this awesome creamsicle cloud baby blanket at some point last night, but have no fear, I have plenty of the yarn left, so I can make you a similar one, just send me a convo!

I have other baby blankets in stock and I have a few more just waiting to be listed. So, keep those eyes peeled!!

Right, so now for the Twinkie thing... I stroll into the office kitchen to make another cup of lemon herbal tea and I see a whole box of Twinkies just sitting on the table in there. And I think, "Wow, Twinkies! Its been like forever since I had one of those!" So, I took one, went back to my desk, ate it and almost instantly regretted it. I now remember exactly why its been so long since I had one. *Sigh*

Espescially for Baby

I've been loving babies lately!! But, don't we all love babies? Perhaps I should say that I've been loving making things for babies lately.

I have these cute little cotton washcloths in purple and white. These would be an adorable shower gift for someone who is expecting a girl:

This pretty pastels square 100% cotton blanket is perfect for swaddling the new little one. The blanket has pink, blue, yellow and green on a white base making this perfect for both girls and boys!

This is my favorite blanket so far, its a classic ripple or zig zag pattern and I used a bright rainbow colored yarn. My 7 month old son was mesmerized by it and kept trying to take it from my lap while I was working on it! Its the perfect size for car seats and strollers and and bright enough to keep baby entertained!

Don't you just love shopping for babies? If you buy any of these items and mention my blog in the notes to seller or in an Etsy conversation - you'll get 10% off! Just wait for a revised PayPal invoice!

Feeling Blue???

So, I was sitting at home going through my bead stash - I wanted to make something I just had no inspiration. That all changed as I was going through my mass of blue glass beads and found these lovely clear ones with blue and silver foil linings. They now have a new life in this 58 inch necklace and matching 7 inch bracelet (sold separately!)

Once I finished those two pieces, I looked at the seed beads in the container with the ones I was using and this necklace was born!

It was a very productive day after all!

My good friend Ali has some super cute new items in her shop too, I am in love with this one:

I also stumbled on a shop called You Stink Soap and I bought this fabulous coconut lemongrass lipgloss:

Article About Etsy on MSN.com!

This is featured on MSN.com:

A Marketplace with a Mission
Etsy.com founder Rob Kalin hasn't just created an online marketplace for crafts; he's built a site that creates entrepreneurs and strives for a sustainable future.

By Laura Tiffany
Updated: 11:00 a.m. ET Oct 8, 2007

After speaking with Rob Kalin, the founder of handmade products marketplace Etsy.com, it's apparent that like any true entrepreneur, his company isn't just a means to a paycheck. It's a mission: A mission to change the way commerce works; a mission to promote sustainable products; a mission that, much like eBay, is creating an exponential number of entrepreneurs in its wake.

EBay is an apt, but ironic, comparison. It was frustration with the online auction giant that first inspired Kalin to create Etsy in 2005. As a woodworker, he was looking for a place to sell his wares. "I [felt] like eBay [had] grown to the point where it's this faceless corporation, and I wanted to create a company that would have a handmade feel to it," says Kalin, 27. He and a group of college friends holed up in his Brooklyn apartment for six weeks before launching the initial beta version of Etsy.com, with Kalin on design lead and his co-founders, Chris Maguire and Haim Schoppik, handling programming.

A little more than two years later, Etsy has 100,000 active sellers and 500,000 members. More than 1 million items have been sold through the site, which has become synonymous with handmade goods. Part of the site's attraction is its simplicity. With just a few steps, a crafter can set up his or her store with a subdomain and list items at a set price. Users pay 20 cents to post an item for four months plus 3.5 percent of the selling price.

And the site already has gained cachet in the crafting world. It's not considered unprofessional to forego building your own website in favor of having an Etsy store; in fact, some crafters who already have established websites build a presence on Etsy, too.

This rapid growth has proven to be a challenge. Etsy now has 47 employees; building the engineering team was so difficult that Kalin opened a new office in San Francisco to attract talent. While rejecting the idea of bringing in an outside CEO to manage Etsy, he has hired a financial person. "We have a really good advisory team, but I also want to keep that experimentation and I don't want to feel like I have a formula for how things work," he says.

For the Long Haul

Kalin applies his deep interest in sustainability to his company, not just the products that are sold through it. He views Etsy as a long-term commitment, not as a ticket to dotcom 2.0 wealth, and treats his employees like a community. He pays them a fair wage and provides good benefits and profit-sharing, as well as a casual work environment. "I wanted the company itself to be a community, based on how much we see each other but also because we do have this common purpose," Kalin says.

This sense of community also pervades Etsy on the user end. The forums hum with Etsy members answering other users' questions. The latest feature on Etsy, The Storque, is an online magazine written by members. And Kalin hired five of the top Etsy sellers to run Etsy Labs, a community crafts center that shares space with Etsy's 7,000-square-foot Brooklyn, New York, headquarters. "It's been incredible," he says. "Two nights ago at 11 p.m., there were 10 people sitting around cutting patterns, learning how to make their own skirts and shirts."

For Kalin, it all ties back into his bigger mission: helping to build a sustainable future. "[An item] has this whole other layer of meaning to it if you know who gave it to you, who made it, or if you made it," he explains. "When it breaks or needs alteration, you can fix it or you know somebody who can fix it. Instead of living in this utterly throwaway culture where if something doesn't work or doesn't fit, you just get rid of it."

Kalin and the 100,000 Etsy sellers aren't alone in this mission to create. The Craft & Hobby Association charted a 3.3-percent annual increase in the crafts market from 2002 to 2005. The association also says 4 million people each year discover crafts. This all bodes well for Etsy, which should bring in more than $2 million in sales this year.

Right now, Etsy's engineering team is catching up with the site's growth, but Kalin's mind is always racing ahead, thinking of new features. He sees a huge opportunity in internationalization, where Etsy will be served up in local languages, showing items in a user's native currency first.

"I think there's still 99 percent of the world who doesn't know who the hell we are," says Kalin, in a very glass-half-full manner. That just means Etsy is still on its way to becoming the sustainable world marketplace that Kalin has always envisioned.
